What Counts as a Quilt Panel?

A quilt panel is a printed piece of fabric designed as one complete unit. It may become the center of a pieced quilt, the entire visible face of a whole-cloth quilt, one block in a larger composition, or a standalone wall hanging.

Choose the Panel's Job First

Before you set pixels or choose fabric, decide what the panel needs to do in the finished object. That decision controls the crop, scale, safe area, and material test.

How Do You Set the Panel Dimensions?

Begin with the current provider print area for the exact Fabric by the Yard blueprint and cut you will order. Do not design from the nominal yard label alone. The usable printed region, crop, and received cut need to be verified.

1. Set the intended finished panel size. Decide the visible width and height after sewing.
2. Add seam allowance or trim space. Build it into the artwork canvas.
3. Add a subject safe area. Move faces, signatures, text, and critical borders farther inside than the expected seam.
4. Match the provider proportions. Crop deliberately instead of allowing a product preview to make the composition decision.
5. Check pixel dimensions at final size. A high DPI number in metadata does not compensate for a small image.

For a panel with a visible border, make the border generous enough to survive ordinary placement and sewing variation. A hairline frame around the art may look precise on screen and uneven on the physical cut.

Which Supported Fabric Should You Test?

For a quilt project, compare the current fiber content, weight, width, weave, hand, drape, print surface, care instructions, and shrinkage. Then sew and wash a sample. If your project depends on a specific traditional quilt cotton, use the material that passes your real test, even if it comes from a different supplier.

How Do You Prepare Photographs?

Photographs need special attention to dark detail, skin tone, small faces, and the way textile texture softens sharp edges. A file that looks crisp on a bright display can print with less separation in shadows.

• Open the shadows carefully. Do not flatten the image, but give important dark detail enough separation to survive the fabric surface.
• Check faces at actual size. A group portrait that looks readable on a monitor may make each face too small on the panel.
• Avoid critical edge detail. Keep heads, hands, signatures, and captions away from the sewing boundary.
• Proof skin tones and neutral areas. Compare the received textile under the lighting where the quilt will be viewed.

How Do You Prepare Paintings and Illustrations?

Paintings and illustrations can use the panel format as a complete visual field. Preserve the intentional crop, watch fine linework, and decide whether a border belongs inside the art or will be created with real fabric.

If you want a patchwork look, build the full arrangement at the panel's final proportions. If you want real pieced borders, leave the digital border simple and add the physical fabric after the panel arrives. The digital and sewn layers should have distinct jobs.

How Should You Describe the Product?

Use the provider's current material name and facts. Avoid phrases such as "quilting weight," "colorfast," "pre-shrunk," "natural linen," "seamless repeat," or "perfect for every quilt" unless the current product documentation and your sample support the exact statement.
